A List” Indian Authors Among Top Highlights at Sharjah International Book Fair

Several top Indian novelists, academics, civil servants, poets and journalists will be joining others from around the world for the Cultural Programme of the Sharjah International Book Fair from 5-15 November – the world’s fourth largest Fair of its kind – and part of Sharjah’s 2014 Islamic Capital of Culture celebrations. The 11-day festival of literature and ideas will bring together popular celebrity authors as well as niche writers from across the India subcontinent and diaspora, to discuss politics, mysticism, translation, cultural changes, religion, self help and fantasy literature, as well as give visitors to the Fair opportunities to ‘meet the author’, a rare privilege for these authors’ millions of international fans.  Shashi Tharoor, an Indian MP, will be presenting in a session entitled “Know the Charming Face of Indian Politics”, at 20:30 on Nov 9th, on his upcoming book, his vision in the development of India and his contributions to make it happen. Dr. Tharoor is also the award-winning author of fourteen books, as well as hundreds of articles, op-eds and book reviews in a wide range of publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, International Herald Tribune, TimeNewsweek and The Times of India. He has served for two years as a Contributing Editor and occasional columnist for Newsweek International. He has authored regular columns for the Indian ExpressThe Hindu and The Times of India.

Amitav Ghosh will take part in a ‘meet the author’ session at 20:30 on Nov 13th. An Indian author whose books are read worldwide and have been translated to many languages, he will describe his vision, his suggestions, his motivation and his contributions to the publishing industry. Most of his works deals with an historical setting, especially in the context of Indian Ocean world. The Shadow Lines won the Sahitya Akademi Award & the Ananda Puraskar. The Calcutta Chromosome won the Arthur C. Clarke Award. Sea of Poppies was shortlisted for Man Booker Prize.  River of Smoke was shortlisted for Man Asian Literary Prize.  ‘An Evening with Authors Across India’ at 18:00 on Nov 7th will bring together authors from Kashmir to Kanyakumari to engage with their readers. The authors include Dr. Aziz Hajini, Sri Alankode Leekrishnan, Dr. Ashtabhiya Shukla, Prof. Vinod Joshi, and Dr. K. Sreenivasarao.

Amish Tripathi has been describes as ‘India’s first literary popstar’ by world-renowned film director Shekhar Kapur. Amish’s unique combination of crackling story-telling and profound philosophies has made him an overnight publishing phenomenon, with spiritual guru Deepak Chopra hailing Amish’s books as ‘archetypal and stirring’. His Shiva Trilogy has over 2 million copies in print, making it the fastest selling book series in Indian history. Fans can hear him speak on the Shiva Trilogy at 17:30 on Nov 7th. Manju Warrier is an Indian film actress known for her work in Malayalam films. She is regarded as one of the most successful actresses in Malayalam cinema. She has won the National Film Award – Special Jury Award, Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress and has won two Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She was conferred Kalathilakam in Kerala Youth Festival for two years, and  recently published a book titled Sallapam. She will take part in a ‘Chat with Your Favorite Actor’ session at 21:00 on Nov 6th.  Shiv Khera is an Author, Educator, Business Consultant and successful Entrepreneur, and a much sought-after speaker. Mr. Khera is the author of 16 books including international bestseller ‘You Can Win’, which has sold over 2.8 million copies in 16 languages. His other books are creating new records. He will give a motivational presentation on 20:30 on Nov 11th.

Chetan Bhagat is the author of six blockbuster books. These include five novels—Five Point Someone, One Night @ the Call Center, The 3 Mistakes of My Life, 2 States, Revolution 2020 and the non-fiction title What Young India Wants. Half-Girlfriend, his seventh book and sixth novel, will have its international launch at 20:30 on Nov 14th. Time magazine has named him amongst the ‘100 most influential people in the world’ and Fast Company, USA, listed him as one of the world’s ‘100 most creative people in business’. These authors and speakers comprise are merely a sample of the top literary talent taking part in the Cultural Programme at the 33rd Sharjah International Book Fair, and visitors will have a unique opportunity to listen to these seminar thinkers and artists talk about what inspires them, and the future of India and Indian literature and publishing.
