As part of its social responsibility initiative ‘Because We Care’, the Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) has participated in the countrywide campaign to observe Earth Hour – a major global initiative that aims to raise awareness about climate change on Planet Earth and also to warn of the dangers of carbon dioxide emissions by saving energy, switching off lights, and unplugging unnecessary electric appliances for one hour.

SMD’s participation in this symbolic initiative aims to draw attention to the importance of collective efforts to conserve the environment and reduce global warning. The event, which took place at the external area of the Sharjah Maritime Museum and Sharjah Aquarium, started with the arrival of Abdul Rahim Mohammed Abdullah Al Hammadi, Assistant Under Secretary for Support Services at the Ministry of Environment and Water. Welcomed by Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Department, the one-hour event featured various activities, including educational workshops, a children’s play, competitions, and a glow in the dark fashion show.

The event started with beating drums to mark the beginning of power disconnection for one hour at the Sharjah Maritime Museum, Sharjah Aquarium, Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, and Sharjah Art Museum, where lights were switched off from 8:30-9:30 pm. The event also involved the unplugging of the largest possible number of electric devices and appliances at these museums as part of their participation in this nationwide initiative, which is widely implemented by public, private, and community organisations.

SMD’s participation in a global initiative, celebrating the spirit of conservation and global sustainability, is in line with its approach towards the importance of conserving our planet and making every possible effort to reduce the dangers that threaten future generations and civilizations on the earth. It also comes in keeping with its campaign ‘Because We Care’ to boost environmental awareness of national and international visitors to its museums. Manal Ataya stated that “Earth hour is a great opportunity for families to do something about climate change. On this one night, in one hour, we join over a billion people worldwide demonstrating our commitment to learning more about how to save our planet by conserving energy and reducing carbon emissions”’

Participating in the event also were Mega Mall, Emirates Scout Association- Sharjah, Sharjah Ladies Club, Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority, Ministry of Environment and Water, Sharjah Municipality, the College of Fine Arts & Design at the University of Sharjah, Family Development Centres in Sharjah, Sharjah Youth Centre, and Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, Watani, UAE Red Crescent, Bee’ah.
