The number of visitors to Al Majaz Waterfront, one of the premier tourist destinations in Sharjah and the UAE, has passed the one million mark during the first half of 2012.

Mr. Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, Chief Operating Officer at Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), expressed his pride in reaching this result and attributed the large number of visitors – which is made up of different nationalities and which cuts across all age groups – to the renewal of and diversification in activities and service facilities.

According to Al Qaseer, the number of visitors totaled 1,151,433 by end of June 2012, and included 348,000 visitors to restaurants and cafes and more than 800,000 visitors to other attractions such as play areas, sport facilities and picnic areas, among others.

He added that the increasing interest in Al Majaz Waterfront can be attributed to its strategic location in the heart of Sharjah, and its beautiful natural surroundings, family atmosphere, and the wide array of leisure options and activities that cater to the needs of all age groups and social segments and stated that a number of recently launched activities also played an important role in attracting visitors, thus contributing to the destination’s steady growth rate, since the very beginning with an eye catching opening ceremony which was attended by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and a large number of visitors.

Al Qaseer credited the dynamic movement and increase in the number of visitors during the first half of 2012 to the tireless efforts exerted by organizers, particularly in terms of planning and promotion, as well as to the continued development of services provided to visitors. “These outstanding efforts have significantly contributed to enriching the public experience and have undoubtedly attracted more visitors,” he said.

He stressed that Shurooq is striving to implement the wise leadership’s vision of achieving a sustainable comprehensive development and creating an attractive tourism environment that preserves the UAE’s heritage whilst supporting the national economy, and remarked that the renewal and diversification of activities forms part of the Authority’s strategy to provide meaningful programmes to help preserve the heritage and human memory of the UAE society.

Al Qaseer said: “With a solid strategy in place we are quite confident that we can reach another record number of visitors by end of the year. This can be achieved by organizing more diverse activities that target all members of the family.”

The 231,000m² park was completely redeveloped and opened to public at the end of last year. It includes leisure and recreational areas such as international restaurants and cafes, as well as the musical Sharjah Fountain, which forms a key feature of the project.

In the short period since its launch, Al Majaz Waterfront has become a leading leisure destination for both residents and tourists. The park, directly linked to Khalid Lagoon, includes a jogging track, picnic areas, Splash Park, Mini Golf,  indoor and outdoor play areas as well as other recreational facilities. Al Majaz waterfront have also won The Sharjah Tourism Excellence Award 2012 for the best tourism destination in the Emirate.

Shurooq was established in 2009 with the aim of achieving social, cultural, environmental and economic development on the basis of Sharjah’s distinct Arab and Islamic identity, and to encourage investment by adopting the best international standards in providing quality services that help attract investors from the region and the world.

Shurooq’s key mission is to provide facilities and incentives to help overcome obstacles facing investment activities in the emirate, evaluate tourism-related infrastructure projects, and lay down the necessary plans to complete such projects.
